How did your passion for Land Rovers start?
At an early age, from watching adverture and nature docs.
What was the first Land Rover you owned?
My first was a 1962 IIA 88″. Took the train from WI to VT to buy it… took me 2 (uneasy) days to drive it home. I was in college and working as a carpenter.
How many Land Rovers have you owned?
1962 IIA 88″, 1984 Range Rover InVoque, 1981 2-dr Range Rover, 1965 IIA coiled hybrid (built myself), 1996 Discovery SD, and my now… 1971 IIA 109 Station Wagon 12-seater.
Do your Land Rovers have a name? If so, what is the name?
What is your most memorable Land Rover moment?
After college, I apprenticed at Ships Mechanical (Land Rover Specialist in Portland, OR)… too many great memories and stories there! One of my fondest offroad moments was completing the NorthWest challenge. Another moment, just this year, winning the 1st place award for my IIA 109 Station Wagon… it was in sorry shape when I got it so all that hard work payed off off winning the People’s Choice 1st award. More so because my truck isn’t some concours queen… she’s a real survivor.
What is your favourite accessory on your Land Rover and why?
I’d like to say it’s my tuff as nuts bullbar or load carrying roof rack, but in truth… my parabolic springs and updated Defender seats. I’m older now… comfort is just as important as cool accessories. 😉
Complete the sentence: My Land Rover has a Soul because…
My Land Rover has soul because it immerses you… immerses you into a better state of mind. A state of mind that’s very difficult to maintain in today’s world. Behind the wheel, and even as passengers, the vehicle preaches a slower more meaningful lifestyle. Yes, I know these old Rovers don’t go very fast, but that’s not it… some special Rovers convey this with just their presence. My Rover has a soul because it reminds me of my own soul… of what’s most important in life. Not to rush… to enjoy every Smile Per Gallon. For that, it has soul… and I’m grateful for it.
